Geothermal heat pumps are the most efficient home heating and cooling technology available. By exchanging heat with the earth (which stays at 10-16ยฐC year-round), they achieve COP values of 4-5.5 โ delivering 4-5x more energy than they consume. The higher upfront cost is offset by the lowest possible operating costs.

Largely no. There is effectively no residential ground-source heat pump market in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, or Kuwait today โ the economics don't work for single villas given drilling costs and the already high ambient ground temperature. This page exists mainly as a reference for developers, district-cooling designers, and commercial projects rather than homeowners.
Large commercial and district-cooling projects. Masdar City in Abu Dhabi, select Bahrain mixed-use developments, and some Saudi Vision 2030 smart-city masterplans have evaluated or deployed ground-coupled loops for district cooling, where the thermal mass of deep ground or seawater improves efficiency over rejecting heat to 45ยฐC+ air. These are engineered at the plant level, not per-villa.
Shallow ground temperatures in the Gulf stabilise around 30โ35ยฐC year-round โ far warmer than the 10โ16ยฐC you find in temperate climates. That reduces the cooling-mode efficiency advantage versus a good air-source inverter heat pump, while adding AED 40,000โ80,000+ of borehole drilling cost. Deep wells into cooler strata exist but are cost-prohibitive for residential.
Seawater or brine-source systems are more viable than ground loops for coastal projects in the UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain because Gulf seawater is cooler than ambient air for much of the year. A few luxury waterfront developments use open-loop seawater cooling at the community or plant level. Permitting through municipalities, environment agencies (e.g. EAD in Abu Dhabi), and coastal authorities is required.
A high-SEER inverter air-source heat pump (reverse-cycle split or VRF) plus rooftop solar under DEWA Shams Dubai, ADDC, SEWA, Kahramaa, or Saudi SEC net-metering. You'll get 80โ90% of geothermal's efficiency advantage at a fraction of the cost, with no drilling and full local installer support.
